The City of Brotherly Love isn’t like anywhere else, and some still question whether the nickname even fits. As longtime rival Emmitt Smith once pointed out, there often isn’t much “love for the brothers.” Still, this town’s passion for the Philadelphia Eagles is its own form of love. It’s intense. It’s demanding. Some might call some of the fans’ relationships with the team unhealthy.

Let’s be honest and rational here. There’s no need to throw eggs at a man’s house because you disagree with how he calls plays. Then again, it’s that intense passion that makes Birds fans who they are, and we must accept that love may also cross the lines and drift into lunacy.

Tom Kelly buries Jalen Hurts after his recent performance.

We move from the consuming fire that is the Eagles to the catalyst that sometimes douses the organization in gasoline before lighting a verbal match. Welcome to yet another 94 WIP-FM case study.

We all saw Philadelphia lose to the Los Angeles Chargers. We all saw how bad Jalen Hurts looked in defeat. What made matters worse was that this was a standalone game played on the national stage.

Tom Kelly needs no introduction if you’re an avid listener to WIP’s programming. His response to a substandard effort pulled no punches.

“My immediate reaction is, can we stop lying to ourselves now? Can we stop lying to ourselves and realize that the quarterback is the problem with this offense? I don’t want to hear about Kevin Patullo tonight. I don’t want to hear about the offensive line. The pass protection was fine. The playcalling was fine. The quarterback has been the problem.”

There are a ton of people who might agree. After that blistering take, Kely could have passed the collection plate around and ended the service, but instead, he continued his verbal barrage.

“I am tired of hearing the excuses. I am tired of hearing he plays the best in the biggest games … Oh, he won a Super Bowl last year. I don’t care about that right now. I care about this season. And, the bottom line is, the quarterback has sucked for the last five games, and you cannot win in spite of your quarterback… Everybody trying to find every other reason for why this offense isn’t working… The quarterback stinks right now. I don’t know what else to say. It’s beyond obvious. I hope everybody realizes it. If you still don’t believe that’s true, you’re living in denial.”

Some of you are probably wondering why these types of quotes are necessary. Someone has to release the pressure before the pipes burst.

The Jalen Hurts discussion has boiled over and has taken over every national platform. Prepare yourselves and buckle up. You probably won’t hear much else until Philadelphia has its chance to right this wrong against the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday.

Hurts finished Week 14’s game with a 31.2 passer rating and a 27.3 QBR after throwing zero touchdowns and four interceptions. He completed 21 of 40 passes. That isn’t going to cut it, and it’s amazing this team still had a chance to win, but the facts are the facts. It’s time the Eagles had an honest Jalen Hurts conversation.
