Michigan is a latecomer in the college football coaching carousel.

Per ESPN’s Pete Thamel, the Wolverines fired Sherrone Moore for cause on Wednesday. Biff Pogi was named the interim head coach for the program’s contest against No. 13 Texas in the Cheez-It Citrus Bowl on Dec. 31.

“Michigan fired coach Sherrone Moore for cause Wednesday after a university investigation that found “credible evidence” he was engaged in an inappropriate relationship with a staff member,” Thamel wrote.

Brian Kelly, former college football head coach of the LSU Tigers has been linking to Michigan.

Moore went  17-8 during his two seasons as head coach of Michigan.

Now the Wolverines are set to conduct a national coaching search after the early signing period started for the class of 2026.

While Michigan is one of the most prestigious jobs in college football, Dec. 10 is a bad time to start hunting for a new replacement. Many of the top coaches in the sport have agreed to contract extensions or taken new jobs.

Former LSU head coach Brian Kelly could be an interesting choice for the Wolverines. Per Pete Nakos of On3, Kelly is expected to be a top option for the Wolverines.

In a way, the late firing could work out for both parties. LSU started its national coaching search on Oct. 26, following the program’s 49-25 loss to Texas A&M in Week 9. However, the Tigers didn’t finalize his buyout until Nov. 26, when LSU informed him it fired him without cause.

Part of Kelly’s buyout included language that he was supposed to make a good faith effort to seek employment, something his representation argued Kelly could not do until the termination was finalized. Amid the delay with the termination, Kelly remains unemployed.

Kelly was linked to Michigan State, but the Spartans hired former Northwestern head coach Pat Fitzgerald. Kelly could be an attractive option for Michigan, as he had success with the program’s rival, Notre Dame.

Kelly, 64, went 92-39 with ND, leading the program to a national championship appearance in 2023. He led the Irish to two College Football Playoff appearances.

Kelly has long ties to the region, serving as a head coach at Grand Valley State, Central Michigan, and Cincinnati. He’s 297-109-2 overall as a head coach. He went 34-14 during his four seasons at LSU.
