According to New York Jets head coach Aaron Glenn, quarterbacks Justin Fields and Tyrod Taylor will both miss Wednesday’s practice as they continue to nurse injuries.
Fields missed Sunday’s game against the Miami Dolphins due to knee soreness, while Taylor suffered a groin injury in the first quarter and did not return.
Glenn did not commit to undrafted rookie Brady Cook, who played most of Week 14 after Taylor went down, as the starter for Sunday’s game against the Jacksonville Jaguars, but did confirm he will be taking the first-team reps throughout the week.
“We’ll see how the week progresses,” the first-year head coach told reporters.
Needing depth under center, the Jets added a familiar face to their practice squad, signing Adrian Martinez, following his release from the San Francisco 49ers.
Martinez, who has spent the last two preseasons in New York, bounced between the San Francisco 49ers’ practice squad and active roster this year as injuries to starter Brock Purdy reshuffled their depth chart.
With the Jets this past preaseason, Martinez completed 58.8% of his passing attempts for 352 yards (6.9 yards per attempt) while tossing a touchdown and an interception.
Ultimately, Cook beat Martinez out for the QB3 job and a spot on the practice squad. But given the injuries the Jets are dealing with, and the reality of being in Week 15, there isn’t a much better option available than Martinez. He already knows the system, a key attribute any outside replacement wouldn’t bring at this stage of the season.
Sunday’s matchup against Jacksonville could even feel a bit like a preseason game, with Cook and Martinez, two undrafted quarterbacks who competed for a roster spot in August, now preparing to guide the Jets’ offense in December.
