Ward, 29, reported concussion symptoms on Monday and was put on IR two days later.
He is now required to miss a minimum of four games before being eligible for return.
The veteran cornerback signed a three-year, $42.5 million deal with the Colts last off-season.
And he will be a big miss as the franchise (8-5) battle for a Wildcard playoffs spot.

Ward could potentially play in the postseason if he passes the NFL‘s five-step concussion protocol.
Across seven regular season games, the former 49ers star has racked up 25 tackles, a fumble recovery and seven passes defensed.
Mekhi Blackmon, Jaylon Jones, Johnathan Edwards, Cameron Mitchell and Kenny Moore will now compete at corner for the Colts.
The team had already lost starter Sauce Gardner to a calf strain in Week 13.

Indianapolis’ injury crisis also extends into the quarterback room.
Play-callers Anthony Richardson, Daniel Jones and Riley Leonard are all unavailable, with Jones suffering a season-ending Achilles issue against the Jaguars.
Indianapolis have turned to their former star QB Philip Rivers as they attempt a late run to the playoffs.
The 44-year-old grandfather has not taken a snap in the NFL since 2020.
But he could be in line to start for his former team against the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday.
“As simple as can be, a coach that I love and an organization that I really enjoyed being with,” Rivers said Wednesday of his return.
“Mr Irsay believing in me in 2020 when it didn’t go so good in 2019.
“The teammates that I was able to play with, shoot, 14 of them are still here. Training room is the same.

“PR guys are the same. Equipment room is the same. They wanted me. I try to keep it as simple as that.”
“It’s a game I thought I was done playing, certainly,” Rivers continued.
“I wasn’t really hanging on any hope of playing again.
