Philip Rivers was not necessarily the Indianapolis Colts‘ first choice as a desperation quarterback.
Sam Ehlinger, who spent four years with the Colts after being a late-round draft choice in 2021, told the Denver Post that the Colts offered to sign him off the Broncos practice squad in the wake of Daniel Jones’ Achilles injury.

“We’re really happy here and enjoy the organization, the path we’re on and what we’re building,” Ehlinger said. “I want to be part of that.
“I was in Indianapolis for four years, and I love everybody over there. It’s just a difficult situation, obviously.”
Ehlinger appeared in eight games with the Colts, and started three in 2022, passing for 3 touchdowns. He did not appear in a game in 2024.
The Colts signed the 44-year-old Rivers and promoted Brett Rypien from the practice squad. Riley Leonard, who filled in for Jones last week’s loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars, was a full participant in practice on Wednesday after suffering a knee injury late in the game.
