The Notre Dame Fighting Irish and Marcus Freeman are still fresh off of being snubbed for the College Football Playoff field and the fallout from that decision still hasn’t quieted down.

While many totally disagree with the committees decision to put both Alabama and Miami into the playoff over Notre Dame, the decision has been made. There is no changing what is in the past.

Freeman and company made the decision to decline a bowl invitation, ending the program’s 2025 season. There have been a lot of swirling rumors about Freeman’s future at Notre Dame and whether or not he could consider another job if it was offered.

More than likely, the Fighting Irish will have Freeman back leading the way in 2026. It would take a massive offer to pull him away from Notre Dame. However, an elite coaching position has officially opened up.

Marcus Freeman, Notre Dame

On Wednesday, the Michigan Wolverines announced that they were firing head coach Sherrone Moore. Freeman’s name has now come up as a possible replacement for Moore to lead the historic program forward.

Robby Kalland of CBS Sports has mentioend Freeman as one of the top potential candidates for Michigan to pursue.

“Freeman has been a name floating around a lot this year, and most recently he has been picking up a bunch of buzz about a potential leap to the NFL,” Kalland wrote. “It remains to be seen whether he has a desire to take his talents to the professional level, but if Freeman is at all unhappy with his situation at Notre Dame and looking for an exit, Michigan would certainly make for an interesting home.”

Since taking over as the head coach of the Fighting Irish back in 2021, Notre Dame has gone 43-12 under his leadership. He was also able to lead the program on a run to the national championship last season, but the team unfortunately lost to the Ohio State Buckeyes.

Looking around the nation, Freeman is one of the best head coaches in college football. He has also started receiving quite a bit of hype as a potential coaching candidate for NFL teams.

It’s possible that Freeman could consider leaving the Fighting Irish for the right job. Would that job be coaching the Wolverines? Probably not, but he has still emerged as a candidate to watch.
