Ex-Huskers Coach Scott Frost sues University of Nebraska Board of Regents

  • December 13, 2025

OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) – Former Nebraska football coach Scott Frost filed a lawsuit Friday, accusing the school of breaching his contract and mishandling millions in buyout payments and taxes.

In the complaint filed in Lancaster County District Court, Frost claimed the university wrongly stopped payments he said are owed for 2025 and 2026 under his employment contract.

Frost is seeking a court order confirming Nebraska’s right to reduce those payments and seeking at least $5 million in damages.

Frost was fired Sept. 11, 2022. His contract was supposed to expire Dec. 31, 2026.

Frost alleges the university said it would include the 2025 and 2026 liquidated damages which made a $1.7 million income tax liability for him for money he never received.

“But, in the same email, the University expressly stated that the payments could be adjusted at a later date, without any further explanation,” the complaint reads.

Frost’s suit accuses the university of taking “muddled, internally inconsistent and transparently self‑serving” positions that left him with heavy tax exposure on income the school now refuses to pay, as well as legal costs and the stress of an IRS audit.

Frost asked the court to clarify the parties’ rights under the contract and order Nebraska to pay the disputed amounts.

A future court date has not been set.
