PHILADELPHIA — Among the complaints about offensive coordinator Kevin Patullo and the Philadelphia Eagles this season is that they’ve been predictable.

But critics couldn’t say that on Sunday against the Las Vegas Raiders. Patullo’s unit was versatile and effective in the 31-0 win, thanks in part to one noticeable tweak.

The Eagles went under center, not out of the shotgun, far more than they did in any game this season.

In fact, the Eagles’ 30 under-center plays against the Raiders were their most in any regular season or playoff game under Nick Sirianni, per TruMedia/The Athletic.

To put that into perspective, Sirianni has been the head coach since 2021. He’s coached in 89 games across five-plus seasons, postseason included.

Now, it’s not as if the Eagles have never used under-center plays. They had success doing it earlier in the season and then curiously went away from it.

Sirianni said every game “calls for something a little bit different.” But perhaps the Eagles should stick with the under-center action moving forward given their success.

The Eagles kept Las Vegas off-balance all afternoon. They racked up 387 yards (204 passing, 183 rushing). They averaged 5.9 yards per play. They converted 10 of 13 third-down attempts, thanks to manageable distances to gain. And they punted only once.

Saquon Barkley didn’t have a monster day (22 carries, 78 yards). But the Eagles made No. 26 a priority, stuck with him and forced the Raiders to respect the under-center runs. That set up the play-action pass. Hurts was 4 for 4 for 66 yards on under-center play-action passes.

A part of that success might have been Philadelphia’s opponent. The Raiders, now sitting at 2-11, are bad. There’s no getting around that. But Las Vegas’ defense is better than its offense, and to control the game like the Eagles did against any NFL team is impressive.

Maybe it’s worth incorporating more under-center looks moving forward as the Eagles look to close out their home stretch strong entering the postseason.
