WOODLAND HILLS, Calif. — The Los Angeles Rams could be in jeopardy of playing a game that will define much of their season on Thursday without the league leader in receiving touchdowns.
Three-time first-team All-Pro wide receiver Davante Adams has a hamstring strain and didn’t practice Tuesday as the Rams prepare for a pivotal matchup against the Seahawks in Seattle. Coach Sean McVay did not rule him out for Thursday’s game, however, saying, “He’s as tough as it gets. I want to see what it looks like with the time we have.”
Adams went down on a deep route in the second half of Sunday’s 41-34 victory over the Detroit Lions. He stayed down until trainers arrived, and then immediately limped into the locker room for further evaluation.
Adams has dealt with a pair of hamstring issues this season. One popped up early in a Week 13 loss to the Carolina Panthers, and he’s managed it with limited practices since. But he aggravated that pull against the Lions on Sunday.
Adams leads all players with 14 touchdown receptions. He has 60 catches for 789 yards in his 12th season and first playing with quarterback Matthew Stafford. He’s excelled in the red zone and as the Rams’ lone receiver in three-tight end sets.
“We’ll probably just go out with 10 guys and just see what happens,” Rams offensive coordinator Mike LaFleur said on Sunday if Adams can’t go this week. “You guys have seen how valuable he’s been for us in so many different ways. Even over the last few weeks, these last two weeks, just the amount of attention he gets in situational football, whether it’s in the red zone or third downs. …
“He’s a Hall of Famer for a reason, and he’s still playing at a high clip.”
Puka Nacua will have a big load to carry if Adams is ruled out. Nacua is in the running for a second straight NFC Offensive Player of the Week honor after catching nine of 11 targets for 181 yards against the Lions. He now ranks second in the league with 102 catches and 1,367 yards. But he has also dealt with injuries to his head and ankle this season, as the Rams have leaned especially hard on his physical yards-after-catch style.
If Adams is out, the Rams will look to a mix of Konata Mumpfield, Jordan Whittington, Tutu Atwell and Xavier Smith to replace him. Mumpfield is built most like Adams of the group at 6 feet 1, 185 pounds, though the seventh-round rookie has just five catches for 42 yards and a touchdown this season. He took the majority of snaps when Adams left the game Sunday.
“It’ll take all 11 (starters) as it always does every single week,” Nacua said. “But it’ll be a great opportunity for all of the young guys and especially Mumpfield, who has been behind him and watching him and is someone we see as Tae’s apprentice.”
Atwell is by far the most experienced and productive of the group. He topped 400 yards in each of the past two seasons and has averaged 14.6 yards per catch and 8.7 yards per target in his five-year career.
The Rams brought him back on a one-year, $10 million deal in the spring, but they have targeted him only 11 times in seven games. He played just four snaps in his first game back from injured reserve Sunday.
Thursday’s battle between two 11-3 teams will hold many of the cards in the race for the NFC West title and for the conference’s top seed. According to The Athletic’s Playoff Simulator, the Rams will have a 90 percent chance of taking the top seed with a victory and just a 20 percent chance of doing so with a loss.
