The season is officially over in Kansas City after the Chiefs’ Week 15 16-13 loss to the division rival Los Angeles Chargers. Mathematically eliminated from the playoffs and without their franchise quarterback in Patrick Mahomes, who suffered a torn ACL in the loss, last week was one of the worst in recent memory for the Chiefs franchise.

In the latest power rankings from Bleacher Report, the Chiefs are now ranked at the No. 19 spot. Seeing Kansas City next to such a low ranking would typically seem like a mistake, but it’s the unfortunate reality of the 2025 season. The Chiefs are now two games under .500 after Sunday’s loss, only good enough for third in the AFC West – a division they had been on top of since 2016.

This season was already the most underwhelming in recent franchise history, and now that Mahomes will be out for the rest of the year and then some, the rest of 2025 won’t stir up any excitement for Kansas City fans. After years of fielding a dynasty in Kansas City, there will be no playoff football played for the Chiefs for the first time since 2014.

In the short term, the rest of the season looks bleak, but the future may be even scarier for the Chiefs. Tight end Travis Kelce is looking more and more likely to retire after the season, after Mahomes’ injury, which is likely to see him miss at the very least a chunk of 2026. Another aging star, defensive tackle Chris Jones, has had the least productive year of his career since his first couple of seasons in the league. He signed a five-year, $159 million extension with the Chiefs back in 2024 – a deal that could come back to haunt the Chiefs.

Kansas City’s dominance that so many have come to expect just simply hasn’t shown up at all this season. There haven’t been those explosive plays that were a signature of their offense since Mahomes became the guy in Kansas City. The rushing game has been anything but game-changing. The defense has been good, but too inconsistent in 2025.

A No. 19 ranking is the least of the worries in Kansas City right now. With a few games to go to finish off the disappointment that was the 2025 season, the focus in Kansas City will be on the offseason, as it will have huge effects on how the future of this franchise plays out.
