Star wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba has fallen off pace to break Calvin Johnson’s single-season NFL receiving yards record, but the Seattle Seahawks now have another player who could etch his name in the league’s record books.

Despite ugly win, Seattle Seahawks continue to impress Mark Schlereth

After converting a single-game franchise-record six field goals and accounting for all of his team’s points in a win Sunday over the Colts, kicker Jason Myers broke his own franchise record (35) by reaching 37 made field goals this season. Now David Akers’ NFL record of 44 in 2011 is well within reach, and Myers is on pace to break it.

Myers is averaging 2.64 made field goals per game, which puts him on pace for roughly 45. Akers’ record came in 16 games while Myers has 17 games to do so since the league added expanded to a 17-game schedule in 2021.

The 34-year-old Myers also has a solid chance of passing Shaun Alexander’s Seahawks record for points in a season, and he even has an outside chance to reach LaDainian Tomlinson’s NFL record. Myers has a career-best 153 points so thus far. Alexander’s Seahawks record is 168, which is also third in NFL history. Tomlinson’s league-best mark is 186.

Myers has made 37 of his 42 field-goal attempts this season and is a perfect 42 of 42 on extra points.

Head coach Mike Macdonald admitted on Monday that he’d like to be calling on Myers less often for field goals, and wide receiver Cooper Kupp on Sunday quipped he’d be campaigning for Myers to be kicking more extra points.

Of course, the Seahawks would like to score more touchdowns than field goals, but they at least know they have a reliable leg that can bail them out as he did during his heroic performance against the Colts.

Myers’ chase for history has been propelled by a recent surge that’s seen him miss only one of 25 field-goal attempts since the start of November. Myers connected on 15 of 16 field-goal attempts while earning NFC Special Teams Player of the Month honors in November, and he’s continued that success while making all nine attempts thus far during December.

The 11th-year pro’s only missed field goal during his stellar run was a 61-yarder at the end of the Seahawks’ 21-19 loss to the Rams on Nov. 16, which would have tied his career long.
