The New York Giants entered the 2025 NFL season with Tyrone Tracy Jr. as their lead running back. He was poised to build off his strong rookie season, where he finished with 839 rushing yards and five touchdowns and grabbed 38 receptions for 284 yards and another touchdown.

Tracy’s 1,123 total yards from scrimmage were the second-most by a rookie running back last year to Tampa Bay’s Bucky Irving (1,514) and the second-most by a Giants rookie running back in franchise history, to Saquon Barkley’s 2,028 in 2018.

But, as we know, especially with the Giants, that fate has a funny way of operating.

Tracy was challenged for playing time and touches early by rookie folk hero Cam Skattebo and then suffered a separated shoulder in Week 3 that cost him several games.

Skattebo suffered a season-ending ankle injury in Week 8, and Tracy began to platoon with veteran Devin Singletary. His game has been ramping up over the past few weeks, and he is beginning to resemble the player he was in 2024.

Tracy knows that there is no going back, only forward. The Giants have lost way too many games in the fourth quarter this season and squandered more opportunities than can be counted. Six of their 12 losses have come by one score or less. He sees the positives in those losses — the Giants were competitive more often than not.

Tracy has 734 total yards from scrimmage (504 rushing, 230 receiving) in his 12 games played this year. It doesn’t look as if he will be able to match his totals from last year. He will need to average 130 yards (or better) from scrimmage over the last three games to do so.
