Every year, each team holds a vote in the fall to determine which member of the team will be the recipient of that season’s Ed Block Courage Award. The award is granted to a player who displays extraordinary courage in the face of adversity.
This year, the Washington Commanders roster determined that offensive lineman Sam Cosmi should receive the award.
Cosmi suffered a torn ACL during the Commanders‘ divisional round game with the Detroit Lions in 2024-25. He started the season on the Physically Unable to Perform list, but battled hard and finally made it back to the field in Week 7 of 2025.
The Courage Award was named after Ed Block, the longtime head athletic trainer of the Baltimore Colts, a pioneer in his profession and a respected humanitarian. Originally presented to a Colts player, the scope of the award expanded to all 32 NFL teams when the Colts left Baltimore in 1984.
Sam Cosmi is the consummate professional, and having him back on the offensive line gave this team a huge boost when he returned.
