NFL power rankings: Where do the New York Jets rank ahead of Week 16?

The New York Jets head into Week 16 fresh off a 48-20 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars.

The Jets have been at the bottom of NFL national power rankings polls most weeks throughout the year.

Is this week going to be different?

Here’s how the Jets fare in national media power rankings polls heading into Week 16:

MVP: Isaiah Williams

Williams leads the league in punt return yards (396) and has returned two for touchdowns. What would have been his third was called back by penalty on Sunday. He’s 15th in kickoff return yards (653). And, on top of that, he had career highs in catches (six) and receiving yards (53) against the Jags. All of that is good enough for MVP honors on this team.

Week 15 Result: Lost vs. Jacksonville 48-20

The New York Jets might as well use the final three weeks of the season to get an extended look at Brady Cook.

The undrafted rookie quarterback had a largely forgettable first start in a blowout loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars. However, the Jets have soured on Justin Fields and know what Tyrod Taylor can offer as a backup.

Head coach Aaron Glenn and general manager Darren Mougey should have everyone under the microscope while searching for long-term contributors. The Jets began their teardown at the trade deadline. Their rebuild will begin, in earnest, in the spring.

28. Things keep getting worse by the week for this group. The defense is bad, the quarterback situation is gross, and they don’t even compete anymore.

OK, so Brady Cook isn’t the answer at QB. All that matters now is figuring out how they can get up to the top of the draft for Fernando Mendoza.

The Jets fired defensive coordinator Steve Wilks off the back of their 48-20 loss against the Jaguars in Week 15. Though it’s never nice to see someone lose their job, the Jets had to make a move. The defense is 28th in EPA per play allowed on the year, and has cratered since losing their top two defensive players, Quinnen Williams and Sauce Gardner.

That’s to be expected, but something has to change. The Aaron Glenn era hasn’t gotten off to the best of starts and is going to end with little noise.

Aaron Glenn is very quickly winnowing his survival island in New York. In one interception-less season, he has benched the quarterback and now fired the defensive coordinator all before the completion of a full season. The general manager who traded the team’s best players isn’t going anywhere, which means he’ll have to start winning some games.

Extension candidate: Guard Joe Tippmann

Tippmann, signed through 2026 on his rookie deal, has proved to be a durable and versatile lineman, capable of playing guard or center. The former second-round pick is 17th out of 63 qualified guards in run block win rate this season. The Jets can be proactive by signing him to a long-term deal. The most important pending free agent is running back Breece Hall. From all indications, they want to re-sign him.
