The Cincinnati Bengals will be without defensive end Joseph Ossai and wide receiver Tee Higgins is questionable to play against the Miami Dolphins, head coach Zac Taylor told reporters on Dec. 19.
Ossai leads the team in sacks this year with five. The Bengals are getting back rookie first-round pick Shemar Stewart this weekend, and he will fill Ossai’s role with the help of Myles Murphy and Cedric Johnson.
“It’s good to get him back, get him practicing, playing and excited for him,” Taylor said of Stewart.
Higgins, who is currently in concussion protocol, still has “another huddle to clear” before he clears the protocol. He can’t play until he clears the NFL’s concussion protocol. He will be listed as questionable on the team’s final injury report this week.
If Higgins can’t go against the Dolphins, it will be the third game he’s missed due to a concussion. He was unable to play in the Bengals’ most recent loss to the Baltimore Ravens on Dec. 14. In 12 games this year, Higgins has 46 catches on 81 targets for 667 yards and nine touchdowns.
Second-year defensive tackle Kris Jenkins won’t play again this season and will be placed on injured reserve with an ankle injury. Jenkins recorded 1.5 sacks and 36 tackles in his sophomore campaign.
“There’s a lot of really positive, encouraging things, and he’s really having ownership in the defense, ownership (in) the defensive line room, becoming a smart player,” Taylor said. “Look forward to seeing him continue to grow in his third year.”
The Bengals are eliminated from postseason contention for a third consecutive year and have three remaining games this season. Cincinnati takes on Miami (6-8) at Hard Rock Stadium on Dec. 21.
