Liberty has officially stunned Texas A&M, and the softball world alike.
The Flames stymied the Aggies, 6-5, in Game 7 of the regional round to advance to the super regionals and send the No. 1 seed packing. Texas A&M beat Liberty earlier Sunday to stave off elimination, but couldn’t pull off the Sunday sweep to keep its season alive.
With the loss, Texas A&M becomes the first No. 1 seed to ever be eliminated in the regional round. Liberty, on the other hand, reaches the super regionals for the first time in program history.
“(It) doesn’t surprise me,” Liberty senior and Conference USA Softball Player of the Year Rachel Roupe said on the broadcast postgame.

Trailing 3-1 heading into the top of the sixth inning, Liberty redshirt sophomore Savannah Jessee homered to bring in senior KK Madrey and knot the game at 3. The next two batters — redshirt senior Savannah Woodard and sophomore JaMaya Byrum — made it to first and second base, respectively, before Roupe hit her second home run of the game to put the Flames up 6-3.
The Aggies battled back in the bottom of the sixth, closing the gap to just one run, but couldn’t overcome the loose, motivated Flames squad.
Roupe finished with four runs, three hits, two homers and four RBIs in four at-bats.
“It was out of body, for sure,” Roupe said. “The weight lifted off your shoulder, I mean, we were battling all day long. It took us eight hours to do it. But whatever we need to get it done, and we did it.

In Texas A&M and Liberty’s first meeting on Sunday, the seventh inning had Aggies fans holding their breaths. But Texas A&M escaped with the tie to send the game to extra innings, and the Aggies avoided elimination with a 14-11 victory to force the winner-take-all Game 7 later in the day.
Liberty got off to a fast start and took a 6-1 lead after three innings. But a 10-1 run by the Aggies over the next four innings gave them an 11-7 edge heading into the bottom of the seventh.
There, Liberty scored three runs in four at-bats to narrow the gap, 11-10. With bases loaded, Liberty senior Alyssa Henault was hit by pitcher Kate Munnerlyn, sending Liberty redshirt junior Savanah Whatley home to even the score at 11.
Coach Trisha Ford then made a pitching change, swapping Munnerlyn for freshman Sydney Lessentine.
With bases loaded and two outs, the pressure was at its peak for Lessentine. The count grew to 3-2, and a fly out by Madrey sent the game to extra innings, allowing Aggies fans to finally catch half a breath.
Texas A&M scored three runs in the top of the eighth, while Liberty followed with a three-and-out, for the win.
“This team is gritty and we’re not going to give up until the very last out,” Texas A&M junior Kennedy Powell said on the broadcast postgame.
Powell recorded three hits, one run and four RBIs. Star hitter Mya Perez recorded three RBIs en route to breaking the program’s single-season RBI record with 73.

After Liberty topped Texas A&M in the second game of its regional-round bracket, the Aggies blew out Marist 17-4 to avoid elimination and set up the rematch with the Flames. Texas A&M needed to beat Liberty twice on Sunday to advance out of the double-elimination round.
Instead, the Flames are burning brighter than ever.
