Sean McVay must really be fed up with his special teams unit, which has been problematic all year. On Saturday, the Los Angeles Rams fired special teams coordinator Chase Blackburn.
Blackburn was hired by the Rams in 2023 but won’t complete his third season with the team after being let go on Saturday. His unit has been a problem all year, costing the Rams a win over the Philadelphia Eagles when Joshua Karty had two field goals blocked.
Against the Seattle Seahawks on Thursday night, the Rams allowed a punt return for a touchdown and Harrison Mevis missed a 48-yard field goal that would’ve given Los Angeles the lead late in the fourth quarter.
The field goal unit has struggled all year, whether it’s been the protection up front, the snaps or the kickers’ accuracy. The Rams cut long snapper Alex Ward and Karty, inserting Jake McQuaide and Mevis into the lineup.
Karty missed an NFL-high eight kicks in the first eight games of the season before being replaced by Mevis. The Rams have cycled through kickers during Blackburn’s tenure, failing to replace Matt Gay after he left in free agency.
