The Pittsburgh Steelers continued their winning ways in Week 16, putting further pressure on the Baltimore Ravens with a wild 29-24 win over the Detroit Lions in the Motor City in a game that came down to the final play. Meanwhile, the Ravens hosted the New England Patriots and stumbled after losing quarterback Lamar Jackson to a back injury. Baltimore fell further behind in the race for the AFC North after dropping a 28-24 decision to the Patriots, blowing a two-score fourth-quarter lead.
Earlier in Week 16, the Cincinnati Bengals went on the road and thumped the Miami Dolphins in meaningless football, while the Cleveland Browns dropped a tough one to the Buffalo Bills in Cleveland.
Here’s the updated AFC North standings post-Week 16.
AFC NORTH STANDINGS THROUGH WEEK 16
1. Pittsburgh Steelers: 9-6
2. Baltimore Ravens: 7-8
3. Cincinnati Bengals: 5-10
4. Cleveland Browns: 3-12
On Sunday Night Football, the Ravens couldn’t hold onto a two-score fourth-quarter lead, falling to the Patriots to give the Steelers a big lead in the AFC North.
The Ravens opened the game with a quick scoring drive as star running back Derrick Henry capped things with a 21-yard rushing touchdown.
After that, the two teams traded turnovers as Patriots QB Drake Maye threw an interception and Henry fumbled. Baltimore’s turnover opened the door for the Patriots, who tied the game on a 1-yard touchdown pass from Maye to tight end Hunter Henry.
The two teams then traded field goals to go into the half tied at 10-10.
With Jackson out of the game with a back injury, the Ravens turned to Tyler Huntley and found a way to do just enough offensively. Though kicker Tyler Loop missed a 56-yard field goal and the Patriots took at 13-10 lead on a field goal, Baltimore put the ball in wide receiver Zay Flowers’ hands, leading to an 18-yard touchdown run.
After a failed fake punt by the Patriots, the Ravens then made it a 24-13 game as Henry took over on the drive, going over 100 yards on the ground on the night in the process. But the Patriots didn’t go away.
Let by Maye, the Patriots got back into the game as one of the leading NFL MVP candidates hit wide receiver Kyle Williams for a 37-yard touchdown. Running back Rhamondre Stevenson then gave the Patriots the lead with just over two minutes left in the game with a 21-yard touchdown run.
The Patriots’ defense took over from there as K’Lavon Chaisson stripped Flowers of the ball, giving New England the football and allowing it to run out the clock.
The loss drops the Ravens to 7-8, putting them two games behind the Steelers.
Prior to the Steelers kicking off against the Lions and with the Ravens waiting around until Sunday Night Football, the Bengals were in action against the Dolphins in Miami. They put it on them in blowout fashion, answering some questions about head coach Zac Taylor’s future in the process.
The Bengals rolled offensively, looking like the high-powered attack many expected this season with Joe Burrow under center, cruising to a 45-14 win.
After trading punts on the first two drives of the game, the Bengals got into gear late in the first quarter. They marched 91 yards in seven plays as Burrow cooked in the passing game, capping it with a 7-yard touchdown pass to standout wide receiver Tee Higgins.
The Dolphins quickly answered with a 48-yard DeVon Achane touchdown run to tie it at 7-7 all in rookie QB Quinn Ewers’ first NFL start.
That seemed to settle the Dolphins down. They forced a Bengals punt and then held Cincinnati to a field goal, setting up a 9-yard touchdown run from wide receiver Malik Washington to give the Dolphins a 14-10 lead late in the second quarter.
But it was all Bengals after that as Cincinnati answered with a touchdown drive in the two-minute drill to take a 17-14 lead into the half after running back Samaje Perine scored on the ground from 4 yards out.
In the second half it was the Burrow show. Burrow hit running back Chase Brown for a 9-yard touchdown, then on the next drive Brown scored from 12 yards out on the ground. One drive later Burrow hit Brown for a 5-yard touchdown, turning the game into a rout.
After Brown’s third straight touchdown, Ewers threw his second interception of the game, setting up a 17-yard touchdown pass from Burrow to tight end Mike Gesicki for the dagger.
Burrow threw for 309 yards and four touchdowns, while Brown rushed for 66 yards and a touchdown and added four receptions for 43 yards and two scores. Ja’Marr Chase led the way with nine receptions for 109 yards.
Ewers completed 18-of-25 passes for 228 yards but threw two interceptions. Bengals defenders Barrett Carter and Jalen Davis recorded the interceptions. The Bengals (5-10) take on the Arizona Cardinals in Week 17 at Paycor Stadium.
While the Bengals rolled to a win in sunny South Florida, the Browns were busy hosting the red-hot Buffalo Bills on the shores of Lake Erie with star defensive end Myles Garrett in pursuit of the NFL’s single-season sacks record.
Things started off well for the Browns as rookie QB Shedeur Sanders led Cleveland right down the field on the opening drive for a touchdown, hitting fellow rookie TE Harold Fannin Jr. on a 13-yard touchdown pass. But the Bills answered in the blink of an eye, thanks to a 44-yard James Cook III rushing touchdown.
On the very next drive, Sanders was picked off by Buffalo safety Jordan Poyer, opening the door for Buffalo. The Bills took advantage as running back Ty Johnson scored on a 2-yard run, though the extra point was missed, making it a 13-7 game.
The Browns answered with a field goal, but Cleveland’s defense couldn’t slow down the Bills as Cook scored for the second time on the ground, this time from 3 yards out to make it 20-10.
A 41-yard Michael Badgely field goal after a second Sanders interception stretched Buffalo’s lead to 23-10, but the Browns rallied. They made it 23-20 after Fannin scored on a rare carry from 1-yard out and Andre Szmyt connected on a 41-yard field goal.
But Cleveland couldn’t come all the way back, punting the ball away just inside the two-minute warning and allowing the Bills to run out the clock.
Sanders threw for 157 yards and a touchdown with the two interceptions on 20-of-29 passing, adding another 49 yards on four carries in the loss. The Browns lost rookie running back Quinshon Judkins in ugly fashion in the loss, too. Garrett had half a sack and now sits half a sack away from tying the single-season record, and one full sack away from breaking it, which he’ll attempt to do in Week 17 against the Steelers.
The Ravens will take on the Green Bay Packers in Week 17, while the Steelers will travel to Cleveland.
