DETROIT –The final 25 seconds, with two touchdowns erased by offensive pass interference, and a season-worst performance left the Detroit Lions and Ford Field with collective whiplash.
MLive’s Dungeon of Doom podcast breaks down the wild 25 seconds, what was said after the game and what went wrong in Detroit’s 29-24 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 16. Hosts Kory Woods and Ben Raven try to explain what they watched and where these Lions stand with two games to go.
The Lions (8-7) watched their playoff sink to the absolute brink on Sunday. To put it simply, if the Lions lose one more time this season, they are eliminated. If the Green Bay Packers win one more time this season, they are eliminated.
Green Bay is the only team Detroit can catch at this point. The Los Angeles Rams, Seattle Seahawks, Philadelphia Eagles, San Francisco 49ers and Chicago Bears are clinched, while the Carolina Panthers and Tampa Bay Buccaneers fight for the NFC South crown.
“My head is spinning like it’s never spun before after a game,” Raven said on the podcast after thinking about those potential game-winning touchdowns that were erased in the final 25 seconds.
“He (the official) started by confirming the touchdown. The crowd goes flipping nuts. But offensive pass interference means it was not a touchdown. And due to the NFL rulebook and offensive penalty, on the final play of the game, there will not be another snap just like that.”
Raven pointed to how the first of those two penalties was the most controversial. The confusion around the second one was due to the lengthy delay and the wild nature of Amon-Ra St. Brown lateraling the ball to Jared Goff, who took the loose-ball drill into the end zone. But the All-Pro receiver clearly pushed off, making for an easy yet frustrating call.
But the first one on rookie Isaac TeSlaa that took away St. Brown’s 1-yard touchdown was certainly more up “for interpretation,” as quarterback Jared Goff said.
“TeSlaa’s OPI didn’t do anything, nothing to get him open,” Raven said. “TeSlaa could have stepped on a shoelace and fallen down at the line of scrimmage. And nothing would have changed about that play and St. Brown getting open.”
At the end of the day, even with the frantic finish, the Lions played arguably their worst game of the season. They got smashed for 230 rushing yards while only running for 15 yards of their own.
A disastrous start to the second half that saw them lose 2 points and 8 yards while possessing the ball for a little more than 1 minute through the beginning of the fourth quarter put them in a two-score hole. They showed life with an uptempo passing attack down the stretch to crawl back. But it was a microcosm of where things stand — too little, too late.
