AMES, Iowa (KCRG) – Iowa State has hired Tyler Roehl as its offensive coordinator after he spent one season with the Detroit Lions in the NFL.
Roehl served as the Cyclones’ assistant head coach and running backs coach during their record-settling 2024 season, finishing with a number 15 ranking nationally. He will finish the season with Detroit before returning to Ames.
Roehl, a North Dakota native, competed against new head coach Jimmy Rogers as both players and coaches at North Dakota State University (NDSU) and South Dakota State.
“I’ve competed against Tyler, I’ve coached against him,” Rogers said. “He’s the ultimate competitor and having gone against him as a coach I know he has the mindset and leadership to help our offense be successful.
During his time at Iowa State in 2024, Roehl helped the Cyclones achieve 27 rushing touchdowns, tying for fourth-highest in school history. It was an increase of 14 rushing touchdowns and 688 yards from the previous season.
Before joining Iowa State, Roehl spent 11 years at NDSU, including five seasons as offensive coordinator. He helped the team reach the FCS National Championship game three times, winning titles in 2019 and 2021. The team ranked in the top five nationally in rushing offense four times during his role.
As a player, Roehl was a standout NDSU running back with 2,512 career rushing years and a two-time Academic All-American, later signing with the Seattle Seahawks as an undrafted free agent in 2009.
