It’s no longer a matter of if the Kansas City Chiefs will leave their longtime home of Arrowhead Stadium — it’s a matter of when. Kansas lawmakers approved a STAR bonds plan on Monday at the Legislative Coordinating Council meeting, attended by Chiefs CEO Clark Hunt and other team leaders. The approval pushed the Chiefs one step closer to jumping across the state line. Shortly after, Gov. Laura Kelly officially announced that’s exactly what the team is doing. The Chiefs will say goodbye to Arrowhead and move to a new facility in Kansas. But they won’t leave immediately. The Chiefs signed a lofty lease amendment in 2006 that extended them past the original end date in 2015 and through January 2031. Even without that lease, it will take time to build the planned $3 billion stadium in Wyandotte County, Kansas. Hunt noted that there was plenty of work to do over the next five years to get the new stadium ready. The new stadium is scheduled to be open Aug. 31, 2031. That means fans will have a few years’ worth of opportunities to attend games at Arrowhead if they want to say their personal farewells to the longtime stadium.
