The Jacksonville Jaguars clinched the playoffs when the Indianapolis Colts lost to the San Francisco 49ers. However, expectations have reset, and they should now be setting their sights considerably higher. Of course, before the Jags think of a deep postseason run, they need to take care of business when they face off against the dreaded Indianapolis in Week 17.

Currently, Jacksonville is a 6.5-point favorite for the game, and understandably so. Trevor Lawrence had no trouble shredding the Denver Broncos defense on his way to another dominant outing, while the Jaguars defense has done a good job of neutralizing opponents in recent weeks. Couple that with the fact that the Colts are in the midst of a five-game losing skid, and it’s easy to see why the Jags are the favorite.

But aside from playing for a better seeding in the playoffs, the Jaguars have an added incentive to beat Indy in Week 17.

Liam Coen isn’t thinking about the playoffs and has the Jaguars focused on the Colts

Heading into the Colts game, Liam Coen met with the local media. He said the team didn’t celebrate after they learned they had clinched the playoffs, noting that they’re focused on their upcoming divisional matchup.

“I mean, we haven’t talked about those kind of goals, and it’s more so just trying to compete like champions every week, every day, and go throughout the process and see what happens,” Coen told reporters (1:57 mark). “So, you know, the guys are, I’m sure people are excited to know that there is more football ahead of us. But we’re really trying to just stick within this day and be where we’re at, be where our feet are, and go compete against a good Colts team this week.”

All things considered, Coen is taking the right approach. While the Jags deserve recognition for putting together a winning campaign, the best one in more than a decade, they still have work to do if they want to play meaningful football games in late January.

Even though the Jags have already made the playoffs, they have a chance, albeit a slim one, to seize the No. 1 seed. But even if they fail to get it, they cannot afford to take their guard down. After all, everything Jacksonville achieved in the regular season won’t matter once the postseason starts.

The Jaguars can knock the Colts out of playoff contention in Week 17

Early in the season, it looked like the Colts had a stronghold on the AFC South. However, injuries began to pile up, and things quickly went sideways. Indianapolis has now lost five in a row and will be eliminated from playoff contention with a loss to the Jaguars. Don’t you think that Liam Coen and his team won’t be incentivized to put the final nail in their divisional foe’s coffins?

At this point, Indianapolis remains mathematically alive, but it would need both the Jags and Houston Texans to lose out to qualify. And based on how things have played out, it’s highly unlikely.

Ulltimately, the Jaguars cannot afford to rest in their laurels if they want to achieve big things. And precisely for that reason, don’t expect them to pass off the chance to give the Colts a devastating loss in Week 17.
