So this is the kind of play that the New York Jets were expecting out of Jamien Sherwood in 2025.
After signing a three-year, $45 million extension in the offseason and a promotion to captain of the defense, Sherwood struggled mightily throughout the season. He wasn’t the only one, but on a historically bad defense, Sherwood’s leadership was a key concern throughout the year.
However, something unexpected happened. Steve Wilks, the defensive coordinator and play caller who had overseen New York’s struggles, was fired. Defensive backs coach Chris Harris was promoted to interim play-caller.
Since that move, Sherwood’s play has undergone drastic changes. He dominated the line of scrimmage in New York’s 29-6 loss to the New Orleans Saints.
It was the kind of game that reminded the Jets why they gave Sherwood a long-term deal, and why they should continue to rely on him beyond this season.
Jamien Sherwood’s bounce-back pleases Jets
Sherwood was spectacular in New York’s recent loss. He recorded a sack, 11 tackles, and came away with two for losses. His efforts made him the top run-defending linebacker in the NFL in Week 16.
For new play-caller Chris Harris, Sherwood’s play was a perfect example of the kind of player and leader he has been.
“Sherwood is an ultimate pro,” Harris said. “It’s been fun to be around him, [and he’s] a guy [who] takes ball seriously. Interacting with him on a day-to-day basis… he’s a guy that’s really in tune with the game, really locked in. He really studies the game.
“It’s been a pleasure working with Sherwood.”
His bounce-back play was a welcome sign. It was also an indication of prior coaching not using Sherwood to the best of his skill set.
The Auburn product has always been a good run defender. His athleticism, as a former safety, also allowed him to stay competitive in coverage. He didn’t just magically forget to play at a high level.
Coaching, as it always does, plays a crucial role in player development as well.
Sunday’s performance in New Orleans only highlights that. If Sherwood can continue to play at a high level, the Jets’ defensive outlook will look at least a little better going into 2026.
And give the team at least a sliver of positive thoughts in the final weeks of the regular season.
