Mr. Irrelevant was thrown into the fire early in his NFL career. Now Brock Purdy is trying to set himself up to lead the 49ers back to the Super Bowl.
General Manager John Lynch expressed his utmost confidence in Purdy during an interview with Matt Maiocco on NBC Sports Bay Area’s “49ers Game Plan.”
“I think Brock’s ready for the moment,” Lynch told Maiocco. “He’s calm in the face of pressure and in the face of chaos.”
Purdy has experienced some huge moments already in his career, including a 17-point comeback against the Detroit Lions in the 2023 NFC Championship Game.
The moment never seems too big for Mr. Irrelevant, and that’s important as the postseason approaches. The 49ers knew they had something special early on with Purdy.
“I think he’s ready for that,” Lynch continued. “Frankly, Brock has shown that from the very first game he went in. Beyond our expectations against the Miami Dolphins at home, Brian Flores is known for bringing the kitchen sink, and he was in that game. Brock stood in there; I’ll never forget a throw he threw over the middle on an all-out blitz to George Kittle, and it just kind of was like, ‘wow, that was an impressive play.’ “
The 49ers already have clinched a playoff spot, but they have a lot of work ahead of them. San Francisco plays Chicago this week, and Seattle the following week, for a chance at the NFC’s No. 1 seed.
“He can function at a high level,” Lynch concluded. “I think we’re very fortunate to have a guy like that at that position.”
Time will tell if Brock Purdy can answer the call in stressful times during the postseason like we’ve seen him do earlier in his career.
