The last two games of the Dallas Cowboys season are meaningless from the standpoint of the playoff hunt, but that doesn’t mean they can’t figure some things out before next season.

One of those might be the offensive line.

The Cowboys announced this week that they’ll be starting left guard Tyler Smith at left tackle for the remainder of the season, and there could be a possibility that Smith sticks at LT into next year. That would have quite a bit of ramifications for the Cowboys offensive line, including for former first-round pick Tyler Guyton.

Guyton entered the season as the team’s second-year left tackle, but he’s struggled with both injuries and ineffectiveness at times this season. He was placed on injured reserve on Wednesday.

Have the Cowboys lost confidence in the 2024 first-rounder?

Jerry Jones made his weekly appearance on 105.3 The Fan on Tuesday and was asked that very question. Here’s what Jones had to say:

Question: Is the team starting to lose confidence in Tyler Guyton at left tackle?

Jones: “Well, we all know how critical the left tackle is. And Tyler Guyton has really got a chance to be outstanding for a lot of years to come. He’s got the right makeup, contrary to any questions about him. But the real question is, can we afford to have Tyler Smith out there at left tackle? Can we afford that?

“Larry Allen, we put him out there and he made All-Pro. But we couldn’t afford to keep him out there, he was too valuable to us inside. So that will be the trade-off. What do we do inside if we move [Smith] out?”

Q: “Is there any thought to potentially moving Guyton to right tackle if you do leave Smith at left tackle?”

Jones: “You can do that for sure. We don’t have it done, or thought to that extent as long-term, but certainly you can do that. Needless to say, the position flex that you have there with Smith, it’s just really a big plus for us, a player of that caliber. He’s easily in the top two or three of the best players we got on the team.”
