Matt Nagy has stated that he’s not prepared to talk about coaching rumors while the Kansas City Chiefs still have games to play this season. But that hasn’t stopped the rumor mill from churning all the same, as the latest league-wide chatter has Nagy’s name circling once again.
The Chiefs have one game remaining on their regular-season slate, a Week 18 showdown with the Las Vegas Raiders at Allegiant Stadium. Nagy, the Chiefs offensive coordinator, has said in recent media sessions that he understands why reporters are asking the questions, but his focus is on the task at hand.
However, Jonathan Jones of CBS Sports is just the latest to affirm Nagy’s position as a very likely candidate for the Tennessee Titans’ head coach opening. That only adds further fuel to a fire that’s been burning for quite some time, mostly thanks to Dianna Russini of The Athletic.
Russini has reported on multiple occasions that Nagy is a serious candidate to watch regarding the Titans’ job. Former Chiefs exec Mike Borgonzi, who worked his way up the organizational ladder in K.C. from 2009 (as administrator of college scouting) to 2024 (assistant general manager), is calling the shots and leading the hiring process in Tennessee. The familiarity with Nagy makes sense through that lens.
Reports of the coming head coaching carousel continue to link Matt Nagy with the Tennessee Titans.
Jones’ report doesn’t call Nagy a frontrunner, nor does he quote a source inside the organization. He only surmises “long looks” for Nagy and former Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy. Both men have served as head coaches in the past—Nagy for four seasons with the Chicago Bears—and Jones believes the Titans will emphasize experience with any new hire. Jones also mentions some young coordinators who should warrant interview interest as well.
The Titans hire is an interesting one because the quarterback is already in place. Cam Ward was the first overall selection one year ago, and recent wins backed by improved play from Ward this season could make Nashville a more enciting destination. The Titans have also gotten way ahead of any competition after firing Brian Callahan so early in the year (following Week 5). Nearly three months will have passed by the time the season concludes and other teams get in on the act.
Nagy has served as the Chiefs’ offensive coordinator since 2023, replacing Eric Bieniemy. He returned to Kansas City in 2022 after being fired by the Chicago Bears, initially joining Andy Reid’s staff as quarterbacks coach. Nagy previously spent five seasons with the Chiefs as an offensive assistant and coordinator before leaving to become the Bears’ head coach.
In another week, Nagy should be free to talk about such things, and the chatter should pick up considerably as well as NFL teams make the decision to keep or axe coaches on the hot seat. It’s possible he falls behind once other coaches enter the conversation, or maybe the Titans will act fast to bring in someone who has been linked with the opening all along.
