Tyler Shough is winning more believers over by the week. One of them is one of the New Orleans Saints‘ most iconic rivals — longtime Atlanta Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan, who retired from pro football to take a seat in the CBS Sports studio on Sunday afternoons.
After watching Shough rally his team to a comeback win over the Tennessee Titans, Ryan stumped for the rookie.
“Week in and week out, he has produced. I think that’s his fifth win on the season as a rookie quarterback, which is the most of any rookie this season,” Ryan said on the CBS postgame show. “Tyler Shough has come in and provided a spark for them. I think they have found their guy moving forward.”
Shough improved to 5-3 as a starter with the Saints by winning his fourth game in a row, throwing for a career-high 333 passing yards in the process. Ryan pointed out that it isn’t like Shough is checking it down every other player, either; he averaged more than 11 yards per completion on Sunday and connected on passes of 30-plus y ards to four different receivers. He’s threatening teams downfield and they’re left with no choice but to respect him.
With just one game left to play next Sunday — against Ryan’s old Falcons team, no less — Shough has an opportunity to win his fifth consecutive game and end the Saints’ season on a high note. Let’s see if he has it in him.
