If the Pittsburgh Steelers are going to beat the Baltimore Ravens next Sunday, they may have to do so without several key players who helped bring them to this point. With WR DK Metcalf suspended and TE Darnell Washington suffering a broken arm, the Steelers are already down critical offensive pieces. They may have to win without T.J. Watt, too.
Despite Watt’s return to practice last week, Mike Florio reports it’s unlikely Watt suits up for a winner-take-all finale against the Ravens.
“For the Steelers, the big question is the availability of T.J. Watt,” Florio said on NBC’s Football Night in America ahead of the night game. “He had surgery just 16 days ago to repair a partially collapsed lung. I’m told that as of right now, it’s a longshot that he’ll be able to play. Never say never but it’s not an ideal timeline to be fully cleared. The Steelers aren’t treating this like a normal injury because it isn’t.”
Florio was reading the quote directly off a notecard during his weekly segment on the show. He also referenced what CBS Sports’ Tracy Wolfson reported before Sunday’s Steelers-Browns kickoff of Mike Tomlin noting Watt must practice fully for an entire week before being cleared to play. Florio’s information differs from NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero report that Watt would play in Pittsburgh’s next “meaningful” game.
Watt got in three limited practice sessions ahead of the Browns game but was ruled out on Friday’s final injury report. Tomlin told Wolfson he never gave a serious thought to Watt suiting up today. It suggests his chances of playing against Baltimore, even with the season on the line, aren’t strong. Florio’s reporting only furthers that.
Florio noted that Baltimore may be without star power, too as QB Lamar Jackson fights through a back injury.
“I’m told right now it’s a shade under 50/50 as to whether he’ll be available for the showdown next weekend in Pittsburgh,” he said.
Odds that are higher than Watt’s status but still aren’t encouraging to the Ravens. Jackson injured his back in Week 16 and came into Saturday’s game as doubtful. He was officially made inactive shortly before kickoff. Baltimore leaned heavily on RB Derrick Henry to the tune of a career-high 36 carries as the Ravens rushed for over 300 yards in a convincing road win against the Green Bay Packers.
Alex Highsmith has been on a hot streak over the past month and added two more sacks in the Steelers’ loss to the Cleveland Browns. He now leads the team with 8.5 sacks this season. Still, Pittsburgh’s pass rush has clearly suffered without Watt and has been far too inconsistent.
Tomlin will offer an injury update on Watt during his Tuesday press conference. Odds are, Tomlin will leave the door open for a Watt return but if Florio’s reporting is accurate, the Steelers will have to beat the Ravens without him.
