Dan Quinn is not interested in resting starters the final game.
He was asked about this on Monday, and the Washington Commanders head coach replied succinctly, “It hasn’t come up with us, not something we’re considering. Health definitely factors in with all the guys, you know, that. But if the guys are healthy and they can play and do the things they need to, then that would be one. But it definitely factors in, but not on the healthy player, if that makes sense to you.”
Quinn was also asked about the possibility of giving younger players more time to play at this point in the season. The head coach still believes some of the younger players the fan base wants to see playing more have yet to earn the extra playing time.
“Yeah, I think when you earn more, that’s fair to say the space for more playing time, more opportunities to go and featuring those guys in spaces. Sometimes it’s not even as much the extended playing as it is, you know, they get their ops, you know, whether it’s a, you know, part of a first part of a progression featured in some certain down and distances. But, yeah, that definitely some extended looks could also be by design, if that makes sense. May not even be the volume of plays, but the design too.”
So, from that response, one understands that Jacory Croskey-Merritt and Chris Rodriguez have both earned their playing time at running back this season. Receiver Jaylin Lane has impressed Quinn returning punts, but Lane has only been targeted 32 times this season with 16 receptions. TE Ben Sinnott, who has been forced into more action with the ACL tear for veteran Zach Ertz, has nine receptions. Tackle Josh Conerly is the only younger player on offense to start all 16 games, heading into the season finale against the Eagles.
Defensively, Mike Sainristil has really struggled, but playing time has not been an issue. The second-year corner has been given every opportunity to succeed, but his level of play has been a significant concern in 2025. Though all of the DMV would like to see LB Jordan Magee getting 100 percent of the snaps in this last game, Quinn’s response seems to point toward Bobby Wagner and Frankie Luvu continuing to get nearly all of the snaps this week.
S Percy Butler just hasn’t played up to the level of expectation, and with this being year four for Butler, we now wonder if it is going to happen for Butler here in Washington. DT Jer’Zhan Newton did play much more against the Cowboys, and he took advantage of his opportunity. So it would certainly appear he will see more snaps against the Eagles. S Tyler Owens has only gotten one start in 2025.
A pleasant surprise was the play of DT Ricky Barber last week against the Cowboys. Making his first NFL appearance, Barber contributed five tackles (two solo, three assists), including one quarterback sack.
DE Drake Jackson is only 24 and coming off a knee injury as a 49er. In his two games of action, he has been in on two tackles. It would be encouraging if Jackson could make a couple of plays against the Eagles this weekend.
