J.J. McCarthy has missed the past game and a half with a hairline fracture in his hand. But Kevin O’Connell isn’t ready to rule him out yet, just because the Minnesota Vikings‘ Week 18 matchup with the Green Bay Packers is meaningless.
O’Connell said the swelling in McCarthy’s hand has come down “a little bit” and that the Vikings are hoping they can have him in the lineup on Sunday. However, they are going to have Max Brosmer and the other backups ready in case McCarthy has to miss his eighth game of the season.

That may not be exciting news for fans who feel that they have already seen enough from Brosmer. He completed 9-of-16 passes against the Detroit Lions on Christmas Day for only 51 yards. In addition, he took seven sacks for 48 yards, giving the Vikings 3 net passing yards, a franchise-worst.
But the Vikings don’t have much of a choice, as John Wolford and Brett Rypien were both added to the roster in-season. Brosmer will be the next man up, whether we want to see it or not.
Helping matters for whoever is under center is that Green Bay is expected to rest many of its starters for the game. However, that could give the game a preseason feel.

And maybe that’s a fitting end to a disappointing season.
