On this date back in 1967, the infamous ‘Ice Bowl’ took place in Green Bay and the Dallas Cowboys were in the playoffs for the first time as a franchise. It has become known as one of the greatest playoff games in NFL history.

Do you go by actual temperature or wind chill temperature? For actual temperature the Dallas Cowboys VS Green Bay Ice Bowl would be the coldest game ever at -13 degrees. However, in 1981 the Cincinnati Bengals would host what has become known as ‘The Freezer Bowl’, with a wind chill of -59 degrees, but actual temperature of -9. The Dallas Cowboys and Green Bay game would ‘only’ have a wind chill of -48 degrees.

When it comes to iconic coaches for the Packers and Cowboys. It does not get bigger than Lombardi and Landry. This would be the first time the two met up against each other in the playoffs since leaving the New York Giants staff. Vince Lombardi was the New York Giants offensive coordinator from 1954-1958. While Tom Landry was the defensive coordinator for the Giants from 1954-1959. Sadly Landry never beat Lombardi while he was with the Packers.

Here’s an old school NFL rule you probably didn’t know about. It didn’t matter how well you did in the regular season. Home field was determined by odd or even numbered year. Odd number years went to the winner of the Western Conference, while even numbered years went to the Eastern Conference. So if this was 1968, this game would have been played in Texas. The NFL would start giving home field to the team with the better record in 1975.

Nowadays the Packers have a more advanced heating system you can check out above. Back in 1967, electric coils were installed under the field to help deal with snow and ice. That day they turned on and then malfunctioned. Which caused what did melt because of the coils to refreeze in those conditions. Creating a nice sheet of ice for the teams. It was not just called The Ice Bowl because of how cold it was. They used to throw hay on the field before 1967 to prevent the field from icing.

It was so cold that when one of the referees blew in his whistle for the opening kickoff, the whistle literally stuck to his lips like the kid in ‘A Christmas Story. The referees came to an agreement with the teams that they couldn’t use their whistles. The referees should have paid attention to the pregame ceremony. The Wisconsin State University–La Crosse marching band played for pregame. All the brass instruments stuck to many of their lips and some of the marching band members were taken to the hospital for hypothermia.

The NFL has this as the third greatest game in NFL history and it has been broken down throughout the years several times. I decided to give you some more interesting tidbits instead of breaking down if the Packers lined up offsides on the final play (they did). Just adds to the history of the Cowboys/Packers playoffs. Dez caught it as well!
