The Pittsburgh Steelers’ season isn’t over yet, but it’s winding down. They only have one regular-season game remaining. If they lose to the Baltimore Ravens, they’ll be out of the playoffs. It will be interesting to see if they make any changes as a result of that. Assistant secondary coach Anthony Midget might already be on his way out.

Kolby Crawford of 247Sports reported on Twitter that multiple sources indicated to him that Midget will be leaving the Steelers to become the cornerbacks coach at Virginia Tech. While nothing is confirmed yet, it would make a lot of sense for Midget to join Virginia Tech’s coaching staff.

First, their football team signed James Franklin to be its new head coach. Franklin had previously been the head coach at Penn State since 2014. Midget was the safeties coach for Penn State in 2013. While they didn’t overlap there, they’ve likely got some common threads.

Also, Virginia Tech is Midget’s alma mater. He played college football there before entering the NFL as a corner. This isn’t the first time that he’ll return to work for Virginia Tech’s football program, either. Midget previously served as a graduate assistant there in 2007.

If this report is accurate, then the Steelers might already be looking at one change on their coaching staff. Midget joined them last year, and he’s helped the Steelers develop some pieces, like Joey Porter Jr., in their secondary.

We’ll see if this is the only change that the Steelers’ coaching staff undergoes. They added a few new names to that group after the 2024 season, including inside linebackers coach Scott McCurley and defensive backs coach Gerald Alexander.

However, the Steelers are likely solely focused on their upcoming game against the Ravens. If they win, they’ll be in the playoffs and have a chance to compete for a Super Bowl. Even if Midget is set to leave for Virginia Tech, he’ll stick around Pittsburgh until the season is officially over. Hopefully, he helps the team at least win a playoff game before he leaves.
