The Washington Commanders lost one of their practice squad members on Friday when running back Donovan Edwards was signed by the Miami Dolphins.
Edwards entered the NFL in 2025 when the New York Jets signed him as an undrafted rookie free agent, but he was cut as part of the final roster cuts in August. Two days after he was cut, he signed with the Commanders‘ practice squad, where he’s remained for this season until now.

He hasn’t played an in-game snap in the NFL, but with the Dolphins’ starting running back De’Von Achane a game-time decision, they needed to add depth. Edwards has a history of being a dual-threat running back.
Through his four years at the University of Michigan, Edwards recorded 422 carries for 2,251 yards and 19 touchdowns. He also roped in 86 receptions for 797 yards and four touchdowns, plus he threw a completed pass once in each of his four years as a Wolverine. Those passes added up to 131 yards and two touchdowns.
There’s only one game left in the 2025 regular season, and it would be a surprise if the Dolphins put Edwards on the field. But they may find a use for him in 2026. The Commanders liked Edwards, but have maintained a mostly healthy backfield in 2026 after Austin Ekeler’s Week 2 injury, with Jacory Croskey-Merritt, Chris Rodriguez Jr., and Jeremy McNichols proving to be an effective trio.
