Vance Joseph isn’t the only member of Sean Payton’s coaching staff expected to draw interest from other clubs this offseason.
Joseph, the Denver Broncos‘ defensive coordinator, is drawing head coach interest, and at least two other coaches could be offered promotions elsewhere in 2026. The Athletic’s Dianna Russini reported Sunday that Davis Webb and Jim Leonhard are among the coaches who are candidates for “larger roles” during the 2026 hiring cycle.

Webb serves as Denver’s offensive pass game coordinator and quarterbacks coach. He is expected to be a head coach candidate someday in the future, but a jump from QBs coach to OC would be a more logical progression in his career. If the Broncos lose Webb, KOA Radio’s Benjamin Allbright believes offensive quality control coach Logan Kilgore and Senior offensive assistant Pete Carmichael could be candidates to replace him.
Denver’s current offensive coordinator is Joe Lombardi, who has had three stints under Payton (2007-2013, 2016-2020 and 2023-present), and the Broncos seem unlikely to fire him, so there’s not an obvious opportunity for Webb to continue advancing his career in Denver.
Leonhard, on the other hand, will likely draw defensive coordinator interest from multiple clubs, but the Broncos probably want to see what happens with Joseph before giving any clubs permission to speak to Leonhard. If Joseph takes a head coach job, Leonhard would be a logical in-house candidate to replace him. Everyone will be left in limbo, though, while Joseph goes through the interview process with other teams.
For now, Denver’s focused on the NFL playoffs. Joseph, Webb and Leonhard will be names to watch in the coming weeks, though, and coaching staff buzz will begin to heat up once the Broncos’ season wraps up.
