We could soon be living in a world where the Baltimore Ravens moved on from coach John Harbaugh to replace him with his former defensive line coach who was passed up for their defensive coordinator job when it came open two years ago.
Miami Dolphins defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver has been requested to interview for the Ravens’ head coaching vacancy created by firing Harbaugh Tuesday night, according to an NFL Network report Wednesday.
Weaver has significant ties to the Ravens. He was drafted by them out of Notre Dame in 2002, playing his first four seasons with the franchise. He returned to coach in Baltimore as an assistant from 2021 through 2023.
It was the Ravens going with Zach Orr as the internal promotion for defensive coordinator in 2024 as Mike Macdonald left to take the head job with the Seattle Seahawks that prompted Weaver to take the opportunity in Miami.
With the Dolphins, Weaver led the No. 4 total defense and No. 10 scoring defense in 2024, rankings which fell to 22nd and 24th, respectively, in 2025. But Weaver is widely regarded in league circles as having the leadership traits and communication skills necessary to lead a locker room.
The Ravens’ head coach interview request for Weaver marked his third in three days since Miami’s season ended with Sunday’s loss to the New England Patriots. He was requested by the Atlanta Falcons, who fired Raheem Morris, on Monday and the Arizona Cardinals, who parted ways with Jonathan Gannon, Tuesday.
He was interviewed by the Falcons and Washington Commanders in 2024, before settling on the Dolphins’ defensive coordinator gig, and the Chicago Bears and New Orleans Saints in 2025.
Miami, while still not releasing a statement affirming coach Mike McDaniel’s return for the 2026 season, still has him on as head coach days after season’s end. That hasn’t changed as of Wednesday afternoon, following Harbaugh coming free Tuesday evening.
As for Harbaugh, he is expected to be the most highly coveted coach of this hiring cycle. National reports have indicated teams with sitting head coaches have been in contact with Harbaugh.
It’s uncertain if Miami is among them, as owner Steve Ross is known to have a relationship with the Harbaughs, John and his brother, Jim, the coach of the Los Angeles Chargers.
The Dolphins, though, have been focused on moving quickly in their general manager search and interview process.
