On the second day of Miami Dolphins coaching candidates coming to light, an expected name with close ties to new general manager Jon-Eric Sullivan surfaced.
The Dolphins are requesting to interview Packers defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley, according to a league source confirming an initial ESPN report Sunday afternoon.
Hafley, 46, has held that role in Green Bay, where Sullivan was vice president of player personnel, for two seasons. Incidentally, he succeeded Joe Barry, Dolphins linebackers coach the past two years, in that role for the Packers.
Hafley joins the five coach interview requests revealed Saturday: former Baltimore Ravens coach John Harbaugh, former Cleveland Browns coach Kevin Stefanski, San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator and former New York Jets coach Robert Saleh, Seattle Seahawks offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak and Los Angeles Rams defensive coordinator Chris Shula.
Miami was expected to pursue Hafley after Sullivan was named GM on Friday. Hafley is up to five interview requests. The Tennessee Titans, Arizona Cardinals, Atlanta Falcons and Las Vegas Raiders are the others.
The delay in reaching out to Hafley likely was a byproduct of the Packers playing a wild-card round playoff game Saturday night. They were eliminated in a 31-27 loss to the Chicago Bears.
Another caveat to Green Bay’s defeat, after leading, 21-3, is Packers coach Matt LaFleur could now be on the hot seat. If Green Bay were to let LaFleur go, a reunion with Sullivan in Miami could be in the works.
Hafley’s Packers defense looked the part in the first half against the Bears, but the unit, missing star pass rusher Micah Parsons down the final stretch of the season was partially at fault for the blown lead. The Packers offense also struggled in the second half.
Before Hafley arrived in Green Bay, he was Boston College coach from 2020 through 2023. In 2019, he was co-defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach at Ohio State.
In the previous decade, he had NFL defensive backs coach experience at the 49ers, Browns and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Ironically, he had time together on the coaching staffs of the 49ers and Browns with former Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel.
