The New York Giants have requested permission to interview Los Angeles Rams defensive coordinator Chris Shula for their vacant head coaching position, reports NFL insider Albert Breer.

Shula, 39, is the grandson of legendary coach Don Shula and has risen quickly under Rams head coach Sean McVay, a close friend and former college teammate who has long touted his potential. Shula’s defensive unit has performed strongly in recent seasons, contributing to his growing reputation around the league.

Back in late November, Shula briefly emerged as a betting favorite for the Giants’ job amid early speculation. However, that momentum has cooled as the search has progressed into 2026.

The Giants have already completed interviews with Mike Kafka, Antonio Pierce, Kevin Stefanski, Raheem Morris, Vance Joseph, and, most recently, Klint Kubiak. An interview with Denver’s Darren Rizzi is also scheduled.

Multiple NFL insiders still indicate the organization views former Ravens coach John Harbaugh as its primary target.

Shula now joins a widening pool of candidates as general manager Joe Schoen and ownership continue a thorough process to replace Brian Daboll.
