Ejiro Evero’s Redemption Arc Begins Now

The Carolina Panthers were on the cusp of pulling off an upset win over the Los Angeles Rams when, heartbreakingly, like he’s done many times before, Matthew Stafford drove down the field for the game-winning touchdown.

One of the game’s more criticized aspects was how quickly Stafford picked apart the Panthers’ defense and drove down the field. Panthers defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero was on the receiving end of some heat for the soft coverage that he played on the final drive.

Now, Panthers fans will need to get used to seeing more of Evero on the sidelines.

Contract Extension

During his press conference following the season-ending press conference, Panthers head coach Dave Canales discussed the future status of defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero, whose contract expired at the end of the season.

Joe Person of The Athletic wrote on Twitter about Canales’ answer.

“Dave Canales says Ejiro Evero’s contract has been extended. Was originally set to expire after the ’25 season. Add Evero ‘absolutely’ will be back as defensive coordinator.”

Evero has been with the Panthers since 2023, and last year was rock bottom for Evero and the defense as the team set the record for points allowed in a season.

In 2025, the Panthers had a bounce-back year, ranking 15th in scoring defense and 16th in total defense.  The significant improvement is what prompted Evero’s contract extension, regardless of how this season ended.

Canales believes in Evero’s vision for the defense and that they will only improve on this season’s progress.

Canales Has Confidence in Evero

The Panthers, though they didn’t win a playoff game, have to feel they are building something after pushing the Rams to the limit. Dave Canales believes that Ejiro Evero is a crucial part of the Panthers’ future on defense.

Darin Gantt and Kassidy Hill of Panthers.com wrote about Canales explaining his decision to retain Evero on his staff at his Sunday press conference.

“I have complete trust in Ejiro,” he said. “Love the way that he’s brought this group to play quality football together, and he’s got my full support. Love our scheme, love what we do there, and getting our guys to play together when we execute this scheme, it’s really difficult to play against, and the guys have found a way to play together, communicate together.”

Canales then discussed how, even in a loss, the Panthers’ defense exemplified the style of football he wants to play.

“And really, like you saw last night and glimpses of the style of play that we’re looking for, the big hits, the tackling, the coverage on the back end and all that, and the rush at times and the pressure packages, the different things that he was able to do to create rush, to create pressure for quarterbacks,” Canales said. “I just love where we’re headed that way and as always, with all of our schemes we’ll look at it and we’ll continue to evolve, we’ll continue to push the envelope and move forward from there.”

The Panthers snuck into the playoffs but made their presence felt in their brief time there. The team is excited for the future, and Evero’s defensive vision will be a part of it.
