On Jan. 14, 1973, the Miami Dolphins completed a feat that stands alone in sports annals.

They capped the only perfect season in NFL history. The Dolphins beat the Washington Redskins 14-7 to win Super Bowl VII and finish 17-0.

I remember the unbeaten, untied 1972 Dolphins coached by Don Shula. They had the league’s first pair of 1,000-yard rushers, Larry Csonka and Mercury Morris. Years later Morris would visit Redstone Arsenal to talk to Soldiers about the perils of drug addiction.

The Dolphins backfield trio also included Jim Kiick. I remember how Csonka and Kiick were nicknamed Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. They were so cool. I remember watching their feats while I was a student at Auburn University.

The Miami defense was nicknamed the No-Name Defense because their players weren’t widely known by name. All they did was stop the opposing offenses.

The Dolphins also went on to win the 1973 title. They went 32-2 in 1972-73. The Dolphins were simply the best and they always will be.
