Washington Commanders offensive coordinator David Blough continues to build his first coaching staff. Early this week, the 30-year-old Blough hired former Falcons quarterbacks coach D.J. Williams as Washington’s new QB coach. Williams is the son of franchise legend Doug Williams.
On Friday, Blough made another hire, bringing Danny Etling aboard as the Commanders’ new assistant quarterbacks coach.
Etling, 31, was a teammate of Blough’s at Purdue in 2014, when the two were competing for the starting quarterback job. Etling and Blough — a true freshman at the time — lost the job to Antonio Appleby and Etling transferred. Etling started the final seven games of his freshman season in 2013, but lost the job to Appleby in 2014. Etling announced he was transferring to LSU in 2015.

Etling sat out the 2015 season and started 23 games for LSU over the next two seasons, finishing with a 16-7 record as the starting quarterback.
The New England Patriots selected Etling in the seventh round of the 2018 NFL Draft. Etling would spend parts of the next six seasons on different NFL rosters. Etling was with the Patriots, Falcons, Seahawks, Vikings, Broncos, Packers and Jaguars. He never appeared in an NFL game. Etling was also with the BC Lions of the Canadian Football League, but never appeared in a game.
In 2023, he signed with the Michigan Panthers of the United Football League. He appeared in 15 games, making seven starts for the Panthers.
This will be Etling’s first coaching job. Blough was promoted to offensive coordinator last week. He served as Washington’s assistant quarterbacks coach for the past two seasons, taking over as the primary QB coach late in the season when Tavita Pritchard left to become head coach at Stanford.
