The Green Bay Packers and head coach Matt LaFleur have been in contract negotiations this week following the team’s early exit from the playoffs on Saturday night.

The Packers ended their season on a five-game losing streak, including blowing a 21-3 halftime lead in a 31-27 loss to the Chicago Bears in the wild-card round.

LaFleur and general manager Brian Gutekunst have one more season remaining on their current contracts. President Ed Policy is trying to work out a deal to keep LaFleur in Green Bay, but the coach’s demands might be more than the team is willing to pay.

Per Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated, LaFleur is believed to have enough leverage to ask for up to $20 million per year on a new contract.

“(Chicago Bears head coach) Ben Johnson got $13 million per year, and (Jacksonville Jaguars head coach) Liam Coen got $12 million per year in January of 2024,” Breer wrote. “Those two guys brought a combined zero games of experience as head coaches to the proverbial negotiating table.

“Logically, that gives LaFleur, who’s been to two NFC title games, and is 16th all-time in winning percentage (.654), plenty of room to ask for between $15 million and $20 million. Will the Packers go there?”

If no deal is reached soon, Breer thinks the Packers could trade LaFleur to the Atlanta Falcons or Miami Dolphins for a top-60 draft pick. (Atlanta doesn’t have a first-round pick for 2026).

LaFleur is 76-40-1 during his seven seasons in Green Bay. He’s 3-6 in the postseason. The Packers most recently won the NFC North in 2021, when Aaron Rodgers was still with the team.

It would be interesting to see if Miami or Atlanta would be willing to offer LaFleur substantially more than what the Packers would this offseason. $20 million would seem extremely high for LaFleur, as that’s the expected salary for John Harbaugh with the New York Giants.

Harbaugh has won a Super Bowl. LaFleur has never taken the Packers to one.
