The Tennessee Titans have an opportunity to nail their next head coach if they jump on it tonight. The New York Giants and John Harbaugh agreed that they want to work together, but there is a struggle over the contract language that has prevented a deal from getting done. If the Titans pounce now with the right incentive, they might just sway Harbaugh their way.
There is a power struggle between Giants general manager Joe Schoen and Harbaugh because of how much control Schoen has over player personnel and how limited Harbaugh might be in that area. As head coach of the Baltimore Ravens, Harbaugh was heavily involved in player personnel and had regular conversations with Ravens GM Ozzie Newsome.
GiantsWire, our sister site, reported that a source revealed Schoen struggles with negotiations and tends to make it personal, which will absolutely disrupt this process. Harbaugh has all the leverage, and with his experience with player personnel, he should not accept any job without decision-making power.
Mike Borgonzi, Chad Brinker, and Amy Adams Strunk need to get on the phone and provide Harbaugh with the numbers he wants and the power he wants. If they do that, they have a shot at landing one of the greatest coaches of the modern era. It’s a long shot, but it’s one they should take.
