Trevor Sikkema sees the Commanders best move might be to trade back.

Sikkema, a Pro Football Focus (PFF) analyst, was a guest on “Grant and Danny” of 106.7 The Fan on Friday afternoon. “I think Washington is actually in a pretty good spot. They’re in such a good spot, I would say, that this is a team that I actually believe could be a strong ‘trade down’ candidate, given the fact they don’t have a lot of draft picks in the first five rounds of this draft.”

Washington GM Adam Peters traded away his round two and four draft picks in the upcoming draft for starting LT Laremy Tunsil. Consequently, as a result, the draft choices owned by the Commanders at the present time are:

Round 2: None (Traded to HOU)

Round 4: None (Traded to HOU)

Round 6: Their own + One from SF

“Not only do I feel good about a player that could be a high impact guy for them available at No. 7,” Sikkema continued, “I think they could have a plethora of players to the point where they believe they can trade back and still get an impactful player at a position they really need and pick up some draft picks they really need too.”

Sikkema summed up how he sees things currently, saying if the Commanders are insistent on drafting a David Bailey (Texas Tech DE), then he would likely be there at No. 7. But if the Commanders look at Bailey and see him as too one-dimensional (pass rushing) and want a better defensive end against the run, then Sikkema had another suggestion.

“If that is the case, you are talking about, then we can move back from seven to anywhere in the top 20. You know, somewhere around 15, middle of the first round, pick up a couple more draft picks. That’s probably the scenario and how I would set up the thought overall with this edge rush class.”

So, the draft talk begins. The common denominators this entire spring leading up to the draft, will be the fact the Commanders don’t have those No. 2 and No. 4 choices, they are coming off of a 5-12 season, and their roster is full of holes.

Adam Peters has a huge task ahead in this draft.
