“You are not going to find a better person than David Blough, He is salt of the earth.”
That was former Washington Redskins quarterback Colt McCoy telling J.P. Finlay what he thinks of Blough, the newly elevated offensive coordinator for the Washington Commanders.
McCoy was in the last two years of his NFL career (2010-22) playing for the Arizona Cardinals coached by Kliff Kingsbury. Suddenly due to injuries, another quarterback was needed in the last two games. “He (Blough) got put in a terrible situation in Arizona,” said McCoy. “I was banged up, I was on my last leg. I think he got in maybe the week before Christmas. He wasn’t going to play, and then all of a sudden, he had to play. That’s always an extremely tough situation to get placed into.”
Blough did play those last two games, passing for two touchdowns with two interceptions. They were the last games of his nine-game career. Yet, McCoy is plenty confident that Blough has learned enough to seize this opportunity as Washington’s offensive coordinator.
“He’s been around great quarterbacks. He was around Stafford, he learned a lot from Ben Johnson. He was with us in Arizona under Kliff (Kingsbury). He was in Minnesota for awhile with Kevin O’Connell. So he has been around very good offensive minds in the game. “He is super smart; when he came in he picked up the offense really quickly. He played like a coach, he thinks like a coach. He acted like a coach. He was just one of those guys you knew, and he wanted to be a coach.”

Blough then spent the last two seasons learning under Kingsbury, serving on his offensive coaching staff. Now, Blough gets to provide QB Jayden Daniels continuity, as well as the fact that Blough knows what Daniels knows and does well.
“He is going to do a great job. He really understands structures of defenses, shades, techniques, coverages on the back end, blitzes, how to attack those. We’ve had really in depth conversations on things we like.”
McCoy appreciates Kingsbury and stated his disappointment that Kingsbury won’t be back in Washington, but the other side of the coin is McCoy is happy for Blough. “I am excited for him. I hate that my boy, Kliff is on the move, I love that dude. But David is getting his first crack to call some plays. That’s gonna be fun and he is more than ready to get this opportunity.”
