Mike McDaniel

The NFL head coaching cycle is fully underway, and the top two candidates, John Harbaugh and Kevin Stefanski, have already found new teams. This leaves seven head coaching vacancies to be filled still, but while there are still many openings, there is the chance that Mike McDaniel won’t get a head coaching job right away again this cycle.

*Prediction*

Mike McDaniel became available after he was fired from the Miami Dolphins, and although he is now one of the top remaining candidates, there is the chance he doesn’t take a job due to it not being as desirable. This would lead to McDaniel taking an offensive coordinator role and waiting until next year to see if a better opportunity comes up.

If this ends up being the case, the team in need of an offensive coordinator that makes sense to hire Mike McDaniel is the Los Angeles Chargers.

Los Angeles Chargers Hiring Mike McDaniel as Next Offensive Coordinator

The Los Angeles Chargers have seen an uptick in success in recent seasons, but for as good as the team has looked in the regular season, especially in 2025 as they held a record of 11-6, it didn’t translate over into postseason success, and instead led to them getting eliminated in the Wild Card Round when facing the New England Patriots.

The big issue for the Chargers was the collapse of their offense. To only score three points in a playoff game when the defense did its part and held the Patriots with Drake Maye to 16 points is alarming, and it led to the firing of Greg Roman. The Chargers need to get this next offensive coordinator hire right, as they have a talented quarterback in Justin Herbert, but his strengths haven’t been showcased as well as they could be due to the conservative offense Roman was running.

The right offensive mind that can help get the most out of the talent the Chargers have, and maximize Herbert’s potential, is Mike McDaniel.

The offense for the Chargers is one that has shown potential, but has ultimately been limited the last few season due to how Greg Roman put a ceiling on Herbert as a passer. Under Mike McDaniel, Herbert should get back on track as a passer, as the fast paced, play-action scheme that McDaniel runs would help make sure that the pass game excels.

With the offensive scheme that Mike McDaniel runs as well, Omarion Hampton would also excel due to his explosiveness, which would be on full display. For the wide receivers that Los Angeles has with Quentin Johnston and Ladd McConkey as well, they would reach a new level due to McDaniel’s ability to create mismatches, which would lead to them getting more opportunities.

For the Chargers to reach the next level as a team, hiring Mike McDaniel as the next offensive coordinator is how they would end up accomplishing this.
