The Chicago Bears suffered a brutal defeat to the Los Angeles Rams, 20-17, in overtime to end what was a magical first season under head coach Ben Johnson. But there’s one play that fans can’t stop talking about that likely cost Chicago the game.

The Bears orchestrated another improbable comeback in the final two minutes of the fourth quarter, where Caleb Williams threw an insane touchdown pass from the 40-yard line to Cole Kmet on fourth-and-4 to force overtime. And after Chicago’s defense got a stop agains the Rams on their first possession of overtime, the Bears were driving down the field with the opportunity to kick the game-winning field goal and advance to the NFC Championship.

Unfortunately, Williams was picked off by safety Kam Curl on second-and-8 which gave the Rams the ball back. On the ensuing drive, they drove down the field to boot the game-winning field goal and send Chicago packing. But the thing that everyone was honing in on with that interception was that wide receiver DJ Moore appeared to stop running on his route which allowed Curl to make the easy pick.

Following the game, Williams shared his initial thoughts on the play before getting a look at the film, and he said it was a miscommunication between him and Moore.

“In the moment, saw the front side safety down, the front side of the concept, ended up getting hemmed up a little bit, so I moved on and had DJ going over the top of all of it,” Williams said. “Just a miscommunication between him and I. Tried to flatten him off under the safety, and he kept it vertical from what I saw, obviously, in the moment.”
