Dolphins CBs coach is heading elsewhere
With the Miami Dolphins parting ways with Mike McDaniel following a 7-10 season, the team will likely have a coaching staff with many new names. Early indications seem to suggest the Dolphins will follow a model like the Green Bay Packers, as they hired former Packers vice president of player personnel as their new general manager and former Packers defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley as their new head coach.
Currently, those are the only two new pieces of the puzzle for the Dolphins. The search for an offensive coordinator, defensive coordinator and special teams coach will soon follow. Those hirings will give an idea of what kind of team the Dolphins will be. In the past, some Dolphins coaches have not been given the liberty to assemble their full staff. Previous head coach Mike McDaniel was asked to retain defensive coordinator Josh Boyer when McDaniel first arrived, despite having no prior connection to McDaniel. Boyer was fired after their first season together.
Former Miami Dolphins Coach Hired by Jaguars
Despite no official decisions being made on the upcoming Dolphins staff, it would be reasonable to assume Miami’s defensive personnel will be different. New head coach Jeff Hafley has a defensive background, and will likely want his own coaching staff to run his scheme. That means Anthony Weaver, who’s been a popular head coaching candidate, will likely leave the Dolphins organization. Miami Herald writer Barry Jackson agreed with that sentiment as he was asked about Weaver and said, “He’s interviewing everywhere and presumably will move on.”
One of those defensive staff members who is taking an opportunity elsewhere is Dolphins cornerbacks coach Matt Araujo, as Barry Jackson reported that he’s expected to be hired by the Jacksonville Jaguars. Jacksonville had previously fired secondary coach Ron Milus.
Prior to being hired by the Jaguars, Araujo had also interviewed with the Jets for their defensive coordinator position. Araujo had been with the Dolphins since the 2022 season, working with three different defensive coordinators in his time in Miami.
Araujo’s Job With Miami
With the Dolphins, Araujo was tasked with one of the hardest jobs in football in the 2025 season. Entering the season, the secondary was viewed as Miami’s weakest spot on the roster. It did not help that starting cornerback Kader Kohou missed the entire season with a knee injury. Additionally, Dolphins’ Week 1 starting cornerback Storm Duck also missed a majority of the season with injuries.
Instead, the Dolphins relied on two veteran cornerbacks to play a majority of the snaps. The team signed Jack Jones in the offseason to a one-year deal worth a little over the minimum. Then, one week before the season, the team signed 31-year-old cornerback Rasul Douglas to a one-year deal. The pair, coached by Araujo, ended up being one of the strengths of the 2025 Dolphins. Douglas in particular shined, as he even won Defensive Player of the Week for his efforts against the Jets.
When a fan on social media mentioned the idea of Araujo potentially being a head coach one day, Douglas responded saying, “I think he’ll be a good one one day.”
