Al Harris made a tremendous impact for the Chicago Bears in 2025 as the defensive backs coach and passing coordinator, but his tenure could be short-lived. On Wednesday, Harris completed an interview with the Green Bay Packers for their vacant defensive coordinator position, according to ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter. The Packers are searching for a new defensive coordinator after Jeff Hafley became the next head coach of the Miami Dolphins.
Harris joined the Bears’ coaching staff after spending the last five seasons with the Dallas Cowboys as their defensive backs coach from 2020 through 2024. The Bears embraced Harris’ penchant for creating turnovers by leading the league in takeaways with 33, and the former defensive back helped keep the Bears’ secondary intact despite numerous injuries throughout the season. Players such as Nahshon Wright enjoyed career years with Harris overseeing their development.
Given his success with the Cowboys and the Bears, it’s no surprise Harris is receiving interest to be a defensive coordinator. Especially with a team like the Packers, an organization Harris has years of history with. Harris played seven seasons for the Packers, earning two Pro Bowl nods during his time in the green and gold. He is part of the Packers Hall of Fame and would have the chance to take the next step in his coaching journey in a place he once called home.
Green Bay may not be the only team interested in Harris, though. According to Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune, the Washington Commanders could also bring him in for an interview for their defensive coordinator vacancy. Harris would have a chance to reunite with Dan Quinn, who coached with Harris when the two were members of the Cowboys from 2021 through 2023. While Bears fans may prefer to see Harris go to the Commanders instead of the Packers, losing him would be a blow for the backend of the defense.
