Washington Commanders Unveil First Renderings Of New Roofed Stadium At RFK SiteSource: commanders.com

WASHINGTON — The Washington Commanders have released the first conceptual renderings of their future stadium, offering an early look at a proposed roofed venue planned for the former RFK Stadium site in Washington, D.C.

Designed by global architecture firm HKS, the stadium is envisioned as a 70,000-seat, year-round destination for sports, entertainment and community use. Team officials say the project is intended to serve not only as a home for football but as a catalyst for broader mixed-use development along the Anacostia River.

According to the Commanders, the proposed stadium would feature a transparent, sculpted domed roof and a continuous colonnade designed to strengthen the connection between public outdoor spaces and the interior of the venue. Plans also call for new plazas, green spaces and recreational areas, with at least 30 percent of the site dedicated to active and passive public use.

The stadium would be aligned with the historic L’Enfant Plan and designed to respect key sightlines toward the U.S. Capitol and surrounding monuments, maintaining a lower east–west profile while rising more prominently along the north–south axis.

HKS, which has designed major venues such as SoFi Stadium in California and U.S. Bank Stadium in Minnesota, was selected as lead architect in November. The firm said the design is meant to honor the legacy of RFK Stadium while creating a modern civic landmark that reflects Washington’s architectural identity.

District leaders also highlighted the project’s potential economic impact. Muriel Bowser said the development could support job creation, new business opportunities and year-round activity at the RFK campus while expanding public access to the waterfront.

The Commanders and HKS have already conducted community engagement sessions with local residents and leaders, with additional meetings planned through January as the design continues to evolve.

Construction of the stadium is anticipated to be completed by 2030.
