Although the season ended in a brutal defeat at the hands of the Seattle Seahawks, its clear the the San Francisco 49ers wouldn’t have even been in that position had it not been for quarterback Mac Jones.

Jones filled in for starter Brock Purdy as he recovered from a toe injury for eight games leading the team to a 5-3 record across that period. The former Alabama quarterback not only performed but thrived in the role passing for 2,151 yards, 13 touchdowns while completing 69.6% of his passes.

After a tumultuous start to his career with the New England Patriots and Jacksonville Jaguars, Jones now appears to be playing back up to par with his rookie season where he led the Patriots to a 10 win season and playoff appearance.

All signs could be pointing to Jones receiving another crack at a starting job which would require San Francisco to trade him, but head coach Kyle Shannahan isn’t all that certain he’s ready to let him walk out of the building just yet.

When speaking with the media alongside general manager John Lynch on Wednesday, Shannahan shared that the team is still open to Jones returning to the team next season.

“You always listen to people with trade offers. We’re also not into getting rid of good players, so I’d be very surprised if Mac wasn’t around us next year,” Shanahan said.

Jones is still under contract through 2026 but will likely draw a large amount of interest this offseason from other suitors.
